M6 Closures north and southbound Junction 14 to Junction 15 8 August 2020

On 8 August the M6 junction 13 to 15 will start to install two "superspan" gantries. These will span over both the north and southbound carriageway, and for safety reasons, we will need to close the motorway in both directions from 9pm Saturday 8 August to 8am Sunday 9 August.

Each gantry weights over 300 tonnes and has a width of 40 meters, these are the largest new structures we will be installing on the project. The gantries are built off-site and transported on trailers from the north-east, before lowered into pre-constructed foundations, using a specialist crane. This technique is quicker and less disruptive than building them on the roadside.

The diversion route will be along the A34 dual carriageway between junction 14 and15 junction.

M6 overnight closures and use of Stone Road and the A449 as a temporary diversion route

Dear resident,

M6 junctions 13 to 15 smart motorway: M6 overnight closures and use of Stone

Road and the A449 as a temporary diversion route

As you will be aware, we’re upgrading the M6 from junctions 13 to 15 to a smart

motorway. We’ll convert the hard shoulder to a permanent running lane to provide

greater capacity and more reliable journey times by improving the flow of traffic.

What are we doing and when?

I’m writing to let you know that we’ll need to close the M6 overnight between junctions

12 and14, to switch the final phase of traffic management and safety barrier. To carry

out this work safely, we’ll need to use the A449 and Stone Road as a temporary

diversion route on the following dates between the hours of 9pm and 6am:

• Friday 15 May - Monday 18 May (northbound for 3 nights, junctions 13 - 14)

• Monday 15 June - Wednesday 17 June (northbound for 2 nights, junctions 13 -

14)

• Wednesday 24 June - Friday 26 June (northbound for 2 nights, junctions 12 –

14, includes Penkridge)

• Friday 26 June (southbound for 1 night, junctions 14 – 12, includes Penkridge)

• Friday 3 July (southbound for 1 night, junctions 14 – 12, includes Penkridge)

We appreciate that the increase in traffic on Stone Road and the A449 may cause some

disturbance to residents and would like to apologise for any disruption you may

experience while we use this route as a temporary diversion. Please note that this work

is weather dependent and may be cancelled due to adverse conditions or changes to

the programme.

What are we doing to minimise disruption?

As you may be aware, we are using a contraflow system on the project, which reduces

the total number of times we need to close the motorway and use the A449 and Stone

Road as a diversion route by up to 50%. A contraflow is a temporary arrangement

where traffic is transferred from its usual side to share the other half of the carriageway

with traffic moving in the opposite direction.

We’ll continue to write to you if we need to use the A449 and Stone Road as a diversion

route in the future. If you wish to be added to our e-mail list for regular updates or have

any questions about this work please call us on 0300 123 5000 or email M6J13-15@kier.co.uk

Kier giving back to the community

Smart Giving - Donna Louise Hospice

Throughout the duration of the project, we’re proud to be supporting The Donna Louise Trust in Trentham just off the A34.

The Donna Louise is a children's and young people's hospice in Staffordshire supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

The team at Kier have been fundraising through weekly donations in return for fruit and has teamed up with sub contactor, WJ Lining, to volunteer time and resources to improve some on-site maintenance. On bonfire night, WJ Lining did a wonderful job of brightening up the parking bays for the Donna Louise. They also painted a dedicated section for “family and disabled parking”.

Chris Belyavin, Relationship Manager for the Charity, told us:

“Great job, thank you WJ lining and the team, the parking bays all looks a thousand times better! Thank you so much for doing this, your continued support is very much appreciated”.

Kier giving back to the community

Smart Giving – Eccleshall Scouts

Delighted Scouts in Eccleshall are enjoying more space in their community hall thanks to the collaborative efforts of the smart motorway team at Kier and sub-contractor, McGowan. While the Scouts were busy having fun over the summer break, the team delivered and installed a 20ft by 10ft shipping container to provide extra storage space. Teams spent a week levelling off the ground and laying top stone before carefully lifting the large structure into place.

Scout leader, Sue Chell told us: “ The new storage facility is fantastic news. Thank you so much for everything you have done. It's going to be so much appreciated by everyone. It'll make a huge difference and help keep the site tidy and more space will also allow us to take on more Scouts. It's been a pleasure meeting and working with you.
